Here we are in the last full month of summer, our store has gone through many changes in the past month.  We are making way for our classroom in the back.  We are hoping that many of you will join us for some of our classes

........We are offering eight new classes in our new classroom in September through November........

Check  the home page for the complete listing

If anyone is interested in learning a new technique in quilting or needlework, contact us

and we will try to do a class in that technique, all we need are three people to commit to the class.

In our quilting department we have a new pattern wall complete with many new selections including patterns from Eleanor Burns, and little quilts from "The Wooden Bear".  There are many applique patterns to choose from also.

I will try to have a tidbit of information each month that may be of interest to  you quilters,  Here is this month's lesson about handsewing needles:

Types of hand sewing needles

Eye of a No.5 sharp

These come in 10 sizes, ranging from No.1: very heavy to No.10: very fine.

  • Sharps are needles used for general sewing. They have a sharp point, a round eye and are of medium length. The difference between sharps and other sewing needles can mainly be seen in their length.
  • Embroidery needles, also known as Crewel needles, are identical to sharps but have a longer eye to enable easier threading of multiple embroidery threads and thicker yarns.
  • Betweens or Quilting needles are shorter, with a small rounded eye and are usually used for making fine stitches on heavy fabrics such as in tailoring, quilt making and other detailed handwork.
  • Milliners' needles are longer than sharps, are useful for basting and pleating, and are used in millinery work.
  • Easy- or Self-threading needles, also called Calyx-eyed Sharps, have a slot for the thread, rather than an eye.
  • Side threading needles, also called Spiral Eye needles, have a slot in the side of the eye to make threading easier and still stay threaded when using them.
A long time quilter has recommended "Bohin"(betweens) patchwork needles.  She says "these needles do not bend and they thread very easily".  We carry this type of needle  and also Bohin applique needles.

We have in the shop, cross stitch and other stitchery charts from the Nashville Market, Kustom Krafts, Imaginating, Stoney Creek, Homespun Elegance, Praiseworthy Stitches, Jeannette Douglas, Lizzie Kate, The Sweetheart Tree, Glendon Place, The Prairie Schooler, Pegasus, Litttle House (including ornament number 4), Mirabilia Designs, By The Bay Needleart, Shepherd's Bush, Blackbird Designs and Rosewood Manor.  There are a lot of new charts to captivate you!  Come in a take a look!
